STUDY ON PURITY

Written by Sylvia

Ladies, Below is a Lesson that I wrote for my Senior High Girls Sunday School Class. I hope that those of you who have teenage boys or girls will print this off and do this with them or give it to them to do in their own personal study. It took me two Sunday's to complete because it really caused much discussion. Take the time if you can to do the questions with your teen - they were written to produce dialog and they won't think you are just being nosy. HA! You will be surprised at their answers! ! ! (Written by Sylvia)

1. Define “purity" in you own words.

2. Do you feel that “purity” is important and a focus for most teens today? _____________ Explain your answer.

3. Of the first 10 girlfriends or guyfriends that come to your mind, how many would you consider to be pure? ___________________

Statistics show that by the age of twenty, eighty-five percent of today´s unmarried males and seventy-two percent of today´s unmarried females have lost their purity.

4. Is this statistic realistic to your school? ______________ Should it be higher or lower? __________

5. Do you think that there are different statistics for Christian Teens as compared to non-Christian teens? ______________ Explain your answer.

6. Do you think that teens today consider the facts of herpes, AIDS, pregnancy, or spiritual and emotional guilt, as a reality and a deterrent to premarital sex? __________
Explain:

Purity - (Webster) The condition or quality of being pure; freedom from anything that debases or contaminates. Freedom from quilt or evil; innocence. Physical chastity.

It has been said that “Christianity is supremely the champion of purity” or in other words about the only advocate of purity. We don´t see it advocated on TV, on the radio, in the movies, in today´s lyrics of our music, in our schools (most pass out birth control), in many homes (instead of dealing with the problem they get the teen some form of birth control to save face “even Christian parents”, and in many churches it is not discussed for fear of offending someone. We seem to have drifted. It´s not that Christianity has begun to lose its punch over the past number of years; it´s that more and more Christians (it seems) now opt for a lower standard when confronted with the choice of living in moral purity as set forth in the Scriptures or compromising (then rationalizing away the guilt). The battle of choices is not new!
Romans 7:15 Paul wrote: "For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I."

Galatians 5:16-17 "This I say then. Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would."

HOW BALANCED THE BIBLE IS! Without denying the struggle or decreasing the strong appeal of our flesh, it announces that we need not yield as though we Christian are pathetic lumps of putty in the hands of temptation. In Christ, through Christ, because of Christ, we have all the internal equipment necessary to maintain moral purity.

We who are Christians, need to realize that there is nothing to compare to the power of Christ when it comes to cleaning up a life. His liberating strength has broken the yoke of slavery to sin. His death and resurrection have come to our rescue, offering dignity in place of moral misery and hope instead of degenerating despair. Unlike the helpless victims without the Savior who try and try to get their act together in their own strength - only to fail again and again - the person who knows Jesus Christ personally, having received Him by faith, has available to himself or herself all the power needed to walk in purity. But let´s understand, that walk is not automatic.

Challenges and attacks against purity have never been greater!

In 1939, the year that Gone With the Wind was released, included in it´s script a scandal-making, four-letter word that raised the eyebrows of movie goers around the world. Has there been much change since ´39? Do four-letter words still create scandals? What a joke? Now we have become a society bombarded with Porno Shops, hard-core X-rated films are now available on cable TV, prime-time TV is full of bedroom scenes, verbal explosions of profanity, homosexuality, nudity, etc. All of this assaults the senses with such relentless regularity that we need the power of God to walk in purity.

1 Thessalonians 4:1-4 "Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;"

Paul here is telling the people what God expects from them concerning purity. He even says in verse 3, FOR THIS IS THE WILL OF GOD.

WE MUST WITH GOD´S HELP TAKE CONTROL OF OUR BODIES
We are to present our bodies as living sacrifices to God. Rom. 12:1
We are instructed not to yield any part of our bodies as instruments of unrighteousness to sin. Rom. 6:12-13
Our bodies are actually “member of Christ”; they belong to Him. 1 Cor. 6:15
Our bodies are “temples” literally inhabited by the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor. 6:19
We are therefore expected to “glorify God” in our bodies. 1 Cor. 6:20
We are to become students of our bodies, knowing how to control them in honor. 1 Thess. 4:4

These bodies of ours can easily lead us off course. It isn´t that the body itself is evil; it´s just that it possesses any number of appetites that are ready to respond to the surrounding situations, all of which are terribly appealing and temporarily satisfying.

Do you know your self and your own body?
Are you aware of the things that weaken your control of it?
Have you stopped to consider the danger zones and how to stay clear of them - or to at least hurriedly pass through them?

In our day of moral decline, it is easy to begin thinking that purity is some unachievable, outdated standard from the misty past of yesterday.

1 Thess. 5:21-22 --- Titus 2:11-14 --- 1 Pet. 2:11-12

HIS SPIRIT STANDS READY TO HELP US! ! ! ! ! !

NOT ONLY IS OUR BODY HURT WHEN PURITY IS GONE, BUT ALSO THE BODY OF CHRIST! (OUR CHURCH) 1 Cor. 12:14 & 26

NO MATTER WHAT OUR PAST, WE NEED TO REALIZE THAT GOD FORGIVES AND HELPS PEOPLE TO BEGIN AGAIN. JESUS CHRIST IS READY TO HEAL AND TO PURIFY. 1 Corinthians 10:13 --- 1 JOHN 1:9 NEVER LOSE HOPE OF LIVING A HOLY LIFESTYLE. BECAUSE OF OUR SIN WE SOMETIMES MAY FEEL “WHY SHOULD I EVEN TRY AGAIN TO DO RIGHT AFTER WHAT I HAVE ALREADY DONE?” IT IS NEVER TOO LATE FOR FORGIVENESS! ! !
