Faith and Reason
An old writer said that Faith and Reason may be compared to two travelers. Faith is like a man in full health, who can walk his twenty or thirty miles at a time without suffering. Reason is like a little child, who can only, with difficulty, accomplish three or four miles.
"Well," says the old writer, "on a given day Reason says to Faith, 'O good Faith, let me walk with you'.
Faith replies, 'O Reason, you could never walk with me!'
However, to try their paces, they set out together, but they soon find it hard to stay together. When they came to a deep river, Reason says, 'I can never ford this, but Faith wades through it singing.
When they reached a lofty mountain, there is the same exclamation of despair; and in such cases, Faith, in order not to leave Reason behind, is obliged to carry him on his back.
Oh, what luggage is Reason to Faith."
FAITH - [HEBREWS 11:1]
Faith is a SURE thing - We will find as we go though this study that without it you can not be saved, you can not even BEGIN to please God! The Bible says it is IMPOSSIBLE! Vicki will like my next statement. One of my favorite hymns is "Faith is the Victory". Have you sung this song and really REALLY listened to it? By faith we accept the FINISHED work of the cross for our Salvation. By faith we can conquer the 'host of night' as this hymn proclaims. Faith brings VICTORY. Faith is important, it enters every aspect of our lives and makes a difference in the decisions we make, it affects our actions and reactions and because of this, the amount of faith we PRACTICE is a very large part of the testimony we live before a lost and dying world. We are going to be looking at faith is many areas of our lives, beginning at Salvation and on through how we as Christians can practice to be Faithful. I want to take a quick second here to thank Nanci for all her help with this. Although I can come up with an outline, and from that write a devotion or study, I have never attempted to do one like this that is interactive. So this is not brought to you by just me, it is a joint effort that we are ALL learning from. We are looking forward to joining hearts and minds through the Word of God. Okay I think we are just about ready to get started.
Always remember to take a few minutes in prayer to ask for the Lord's help before you begin to study God's Word. Ask for His knowledge and understanding. Also, when answering questions use only your Bible, do not blot your thinking by using other commentaries or examples. Remember this is a time of YOUR learning the word and NOT someone else's interpretation of it. Please don't feel silly about your answers, or inhibited about joining in.. the only way to LEARN the Word of God is to perform the DOING of it amen?
Before we begin write a summary of what faith means to you. Look into your life and list any area's where your faith may be lacking. The reason for writing this before we begin is to watch our growth in faith as we proceed through the study. Oh, one more thing... along with writing in your notebook, set to memory our key verse for this study. Once you have learned it and can say quote it, be sure to test yourself and add it to your notebook. Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
All done? You have it memorized right? Good then let's get started.
Father, we come to you with hearts willing to learn. We thank you for a PERFECT BOOK that you have given us to help us understand all that you would have us to know. Lord, we get so busy in the life we live, we hear so much about self-empowerment, 'I can do it myself' promotions - and we know Father as your children You want us to depend on you. O Lord, help our unbelief, enlarge our FAITH. In Jesus name, Amen
Remember you will need to copy paste this lesson- to fill in your answers and send in your responses. We will begin to 'discuss' and study it out together on Thursday! INTRODUCTION: True Bible faith is not an emotional "hope-so"; it is real conviction based on the Word of God (Rom. 10:17). The word substance means "assurance" and the word evidence means "proof'. The writer of Hebrews gives us a definite meaning of what faith is: Hebrew 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Through this study we will learn the true and real meaning of faith in God. We will determine where our faith lies. We will ask ourselves if we have TRUE BIBLICAL faith in God, or if we are riding on the misconstrued concept of "faith in faith" that is being taught which is based on an emotional basis.
I. FAITH THAT IS MATCHLESS
in Eph. 4:5 The apostle Paul writes: One Lord, one faith, one baptism. True faith in God as we can see in these few short words is MATCHLESS to anything else.
Take a look at the following Scriptures (King James Version), EACH scripture gives an example of how faith works in the life of Believers. Look up each scripture and list what role MATCHLESS faith plays in our lives.
1. It_________ us. John 3:16, 36; 5:24; Rom. 5:1
2. It_________ us. Acts 15:9, 26:18
3. It_________ us. Ephesians 6:16
4. The World recognizes many god's - Is there any way possible that anyone besides God Himself can hold these qualities? (ie, buddah, popes, allah, etc.)
5. Is there any doubt in your heart that "#1" & "#2" have been accomplished in your life?
6. Can you think of a time in your life that can testify of "#3"? If so, please write a paragraph to testify of it.
Part 2. A FAITH THAT IS MEANINGFUL
(Anything with real meaning we hold dear to our hearts) Read the following scriptures and fill in the blanks and answer the questions according to your understanding of what the Bible says.
1.(II Peter 1:1) Faith is _______________
A. The Bible says in this verse that this Faith comes from the righteousness of God [ie: His way is totally acceptable] and our Saviour Jesus Christ, Open your Bible to Romans 1:17 THIS IS OUR MEMORY VERSE FOR THIS PART OF OUR STUDY.
Ro 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
'The just shall live by faith' -- This phrase is mentioned only 4 times in the Bible. There is a different application in each, however, each tells us what it means in its context. This one verse sets the theme of the book of Romans. In Romans Paul is launching his writing of the entire book of Romans here. It is the plight of man and his purpose. It is the truth of how SIN in our life will spiral us downward. By the 2nd chapter Paul is talking to his Jewish brethren, they thought they were 'special' they had the law, and Paul confronts them. He reminds them that NOW the JUST shall live by FAITH.
In Gal. 3 we find this phrase again, he reminds again that there is no POWER in the law to make us NEW. In contrast by trusting in Jesus and His finished work on the cross by FAITH is the answer.
Say it this way -- The just by faith shall live. It applies to us personally! That is what Paul is saying -- RECOGNIZE that it gives us something more than a new Religion it gives us LIFE. The one that is justified by Faith ALWAYS will live.
Okay let's move on ;)
2. (I Peter 1:5) Faith _________ the saints.
A. What a hot topic eternal security is! Can you find at least 2 other verses that claims that our Salvation is once and for all?
3. Faith Produces 4 things that we will focus on:
Faith Produces: 1. _______________ (Rom. 5:2)
2. _______________ (Acts16:34; I Peter 1:8)
3._______________ (Rom. 15:13)
4._______________ (Isa. 28:16; I Peter 2:6)
What a production!! All four of these mentioned here should be evident in our lives at ALL times! Remember our verse from our last lesson? You better ;) We memorized it right?
Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
"The evidence of things not seen" I have seen this explained in many ways .. but in light of the 4 "productions" we have just found in our Bibles in regards to FAITH, I would like to make the application here that when we live by FAITH we are helping the world to see JESUS, He can not be seen but by our actions, by our REACTIONS
We have searched and so far have found that The Faith we have through Our Lord Jesus Christ is MATCHLESS, nothing can compare!! We have found that this faith is Meaningful, We realized that it is PRECIOUS, and if we practice it in our life we can have HOPE JOY PEACE and CONFIDENCE. It is up to us ladies.
We learned 2 verses so far: Heb 11:1 -- Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Also: Ro 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
This time we will memorize: Heb 10:38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
NO pleasure, I dont know about you but I suspect that the very thought of this breaks your heart as it does mine. I dont ever want to have God be displeased with me. Not that any of us are perfect, but Praise God we can strive to be holy as He is holy. Le 20:7. Faith is our all and all in our walk here.. The JUST shall live by faith, it is not only Matchless, and Meaningful it MINISTERS to us so that we can obtain favor with our Heavenly Father.
III. FAITH THAT MINISTERS
The Lord gave me 7 ways that Faith Ministers to us as believers, find those and if you know of others with Scripture to support it by all means please post them.
B.__________(Rom. 11:20; II Cor. 1:24)
C.__________(Rom 4:12; II Cor 5:7)
E.__________(I John 5:4-5)

Faithfulness is an attribute both of God and man, implying loyalty, constancy, and freedom from arbitrariness or fickleness. (I Cor 1:18, Gal. 5:22, 2Tim. 2:2)We have looked at the attributes of God's Faith , now let's take a look at how our Faith is to be practiced.
