I see the reasons for convictions to be three-fold:

1. To Demonstrate our Obedience to the Will of God
2. To Distance Ourselves from the Ways of the Godless
3. To Differentiate Ourselves from the World

I believe you can find these three reasons in 1 Cor 6:11-18.

I believe that the true conviction that is missing today is that of being convinced we must have the right attitude. Here is an outline of some verses that show how and why we ought to have convictions.

Conviction of Right Motive
1 Cor 10:31

I. The Sense of Transgression - Matt 5:27,28

A. Two Fold Sin

1. The Act - v27
2. The Attitude - v28

B. The False Sacrifice - 1 Sam 16:7
C. The Full Search - Jer 17:10

II. The Stand for Truth - Gal 1:10

A. The Person of our Conviction - Gal 1:10
B. The Poison of no Conviction - 1 Cor 8:12
C. The Problem with some Convictions - Gal 5:26

III. The Suffering of Teaching - Luke 17:1

A. The Inevitable Offense - Luke 17:1
B. The Important Offer - 2 Tim 4:2
C. The Infallible Oath - Gal 4:16

IV. The Strength of Testimony - 1 Cor 10:31

A. Motive toward Glory - 1 Cor 10-31
B. Motive toward Gain - Matt 18:21,22
C. Motive toward Grace - Matt 11:29

Our problem is we get so wrapped up in the conviction we forget the reason for it in the first place.
